Knit Techniques


• Saturdays, March 17 & 24, 2012

10:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Class Fee: $80 (includes large sample kit)

Build your confidence as you sew with knits during this two-week class. You will make several seam and hem samples, followed by samples of ribbed, bound, and turn-and-stitch necklines. We will discuss how to choose the right fabric for a project and how to plan the correct amount of ease. Save your many samples for future reference.



Lingerie

Class Fee: $65

Come learn the skills you'll need to express your secret self making slips and sleepwear. You will adjust the pattern to resolve fit issues, work with bias-cut fabric, apply lace trims, and make yourself a one-of-a-kind slip, teddie or nightgown from Kwik Sew 3726. Contact Elizabeth if you want to use another pattern, and for tips on fabric selection.



Pants Fitting Workshop

Class Fee: $85

Don't you feel great when your pants fit? Take a day to focus on getting a pants pattern that really fits - what a great investment in your wardrobe! You will pin-fit your chosen pattern's tissue, then cut out and baste a sample pair of pants so we can refine the fit still further, with zipper demo.

Button-Up Shirt

Enhance intermediate sewing skills as you sew a button-front shirt for yourself or someone you love. You will hone all your sewing skills as you shape and attach a collar, set in sleeves, create facings, and make buttonholes. Purchase supplies in advance so you arrive at the first class ready to adjust patterns and cut out your project. Recommended pattern list is available in the store. Knit Skirt in a Day

Knit skirts are everywhere! Come make yourself a knit skirt, learning basic techniques for sewing with knits as you go. Choose the style details you prefer - straight or flared; fold-over, drawstring, or hidden elastic waistband. This skirt will become your go-to item, whether for the dog days of winter or in the hope of spring!

Welcome to the world of knits! Learn how to use and control the stretch in knits as you sew a variety of seam and hem samples. You will create samples of ribbed, bound, and turn-and-stitch necklines, and finish with a discussion of how to choose an appropriate knit fabric for your project and plan the correct amount of ease. Make yourself a knit top or dress with your own creative touches-that fits! Week one we will discuss cutting out knits, review ease for proper fit of knits, and make sure that edge allowances reflect your design decisions. You will learn Elizabeth's expert tips as you sew the neckline, shoulder seams, sleeves, hems and other finishing touches. Recommended pattern list is available at the store. Lined Skirt

A great-fitting skirt is an elusive fashion essential. Adjust the fit on one of several selected patterns, and make a skirt you will really love: fit that enhances your figure, a zipper to brag about, an invisible hem, and a lining... ah, the lining is just for you. Skills to use include pattern adjustments, darts, zippers, edge stitching, hand sewing, and working with lining fabric. Pattern list available in the store or contact Elizabeth.

You want to love them, but something doesn't work. Bring two or three garments you want to use more (and both straight and safety pins). Elizabeth will share her alterations expertise as she pins each garment to fit and the entire group learns about alterations methods and options. Issues for tops, jackets, shirts, and vests may include shoulders, sleeves, neckline, armholes, length and/or body width. Skirts and pants often need waist and crotch adjustments, tapering, hemming and/or lengthening. These classes will show you how to turn your wardrobe flops into workhorses.

Mark your calendars; sign up in advance or just drop in to Josephine's on one Saturday of each month to use our machines and/or receive individual help with sewing techniques, fitting, pattern alterations or problem solving from professional dressmakers and instructors Marla Kazell and Elizabeth Miles. With over 50 years of experience between them, Marla and Elizabeth can help you jump-start your sewing.

This four-week class introduces adults to the art of sewing. Each student will choose and make a project from an instructor-approved list. In addition, everyone will practice these techniques: pinning and cutting, basic seam finishes, stay stitching, fusing interfacing, and making a casing, a lapped zipper and shaped seams. Class fee includes sample supplies; Elizabeth also brings basic sewing tools for your use during class. First class attendance is crucial to learn machine skills and purchase project supplies. Approved projects include specific patterns for pull-on pants, pull-on skirts, aprons, a tote, a small purse, and a decorator pillow.



Sewing Basics II


• Tuesdays, April 24 - May 15, 2012

6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Class Fee: $100

Expand your sewing knowledge with valuable techniques-and immortalize them in your own project. Students will shop for project supplies and sew many seam samples the first week. Other samples include darts, trimming, clipping, under-stitched facings, using bias tape, a review of the lapped zipper, a blind hem and a slip-stitched hem. Alumni say they love to refer to their samples while sewing on their own. Project list is available in the store, or contact Elizabeth. (Some projects require work outside of class)
